Lugar: Camp Adaptive Actions, Estacin Atocha, Planta 2

From Context to Situation: Micropolitics and Adaptive Actions
By Marie-Pier Boucher
Talk: Friday February 18th - 7pm
Workshop: Thursday February 18th - 7pm
Place: Adaptive Actions camp, Atocha station, floor two
Since 2007, Adaptive Actions (AA) has been actively creating/generating an online reservoir of urban interventions. In the form of an open invitation AA opens various platforms for thinking and generating change in the urban environment. By looking at several artistic interventions from the late 30's to the early 60's, AA will be first situated in the context of performance studies. These historical resonances will be followed by the presentation of a discussion with Brian Massumi and Jean-Francois Prost in context of which the notion of adaptation has been questioned on the level of its operational form: a form that resists to the traditional idea of an adaptation TO a situation and that rather activates processes of adaptations and de-adaptations of the situation. This way of understanding adaptation raised issues surrounding the possibilities for an adaptive action to perform a creative resistance whilst dealing with situations based on scale binary oppositions such as micro and macro, local and global, minority and majority, etc. Through presenting a number of actions from AA's reservoir I will emphasize the ways in which these quantitative oppositions can operate on a micropolitical level by transforming the binary oppositions into qualitative situations, by staging situation-based actions (as opposed to context-based ones).
