MONTRÉAL
L'AVENIR - (LOOKING FORWARD)

UN MOT DES COMMISSAIRES

Toutes les composantes de notre projet
seront réunies sous le titre de L'avenir – (looking forward).

Comme le laisse entendre ce titre, le
projet se veut une réflexion sur l'histoire et l'état actuel de la
prospective, en lien avec les développements récents en art
contemporain. La notion d'« avenir » fournit un cadre nous
permettant d'examiner notre situation présente en termes
géopolitique, environnemental, technologique, scientifique, social,
culturel, idéologique, éthique et métaphysique.

Notre objectif est d'analyser la
relation qui existe entre les pratiques en art contemporain et les
discours historiques sur le futur, d'une part, et nos modes de
projection actuels dans l'avenir. Ainsi, l'exposition présentera des
artistes travaillant en cinéma, en sculpture, en photographie, en
peinture et en installation qui réagissent au monde contemporain en
envisageant l'avenir. Elle réunira également des artistes dont les
démarches – fréquemment de nature situationnelle, performative et
temporelle – sont socialement réceptives aux défis posés par des
avenirs possibles, de même que des artistes qui abordent la question
épineuse de la capacité d'action de l'art aujourd'hui, à savoir si
l'art peut effectivement influencer l'avenir.

Différents états de performance et de
temporalité sont évoqués par le titre du projet et par l'idée «
d'anticiper l'avenir » (looking forward), formule qui sous-entend
une action faisant appel à la fois au présent et au futur.
L'anticipation implique la représentation d'un moment à venir. Ce
processus, qui est intrinsèque au projet, aura pour objet la
relation entre la vue et la conscience, de même que son rôle à la
fois pour témoigner du présent et pour représenter l'avenir.
Ultimement, notre exposition vise à faire un retour en arrière, à
partir des futurs possibles, pour examiner le présent et aborder les
rapports entre le local et le mondial dans ce contexte.

STATEMENT FROM THE CURATORS OF LA
BIENNALE DE MONTRÉAL

Our project will be assembled under the
banner title L'avenir - (looking forward).

As the title suggests the focus of the
project is on speculation and the history and currency of projecting
into the future in relationship to recent developments in
contemporary art. The idea of "what is to come" provides a
framework for considering our current condition from geo-political,
environmental, technological, scientific, social, cultural,
ideological, economic, ethical and metaphysical perspectives.

We are seeking to examine the
relationship of contemporary art practices to both historical
discourses of futurity and the currency of projecting into the
future. Accordingly the exhibition will present artists working in
film, sculpture, photography, painting and installation who respond
to current conditions by considering "what is to come". It
will also include artists who propose art practices that are socially
responsive to challenges presented by possible futures, practices
that are frequently situational, performative and temporal, as well
as artists who address the vexed question of the current agency of
art and whether it has the transformational potential to influence
the future.

States of performance and temporality
are evoked in the project title and the idea of 'looking forward',
which involves an action that simultaneously engages both the present
and future. To look forward implies picturing a future moment, a
process that is intrinsic to the project, which will examine the
relationship of sight to consciousness and its role in both
witnessing the present and imaging the future. Ultimately our
exhibition aims to look backwards from possible futures to consider
the present and to address the connectedness of the local to the
global in that context.
