ESCANEAR, TRANSCRIBIR, SUPLEMENTAR / SCAN, SCRIPT, SUPPLEMENT : FIELD NOTES FROM MADRID **************

PARKED TURTLES AT ESTACI

PLAYFUL DISTURBANCE WITHIN MUSEO REINA SOFIA'S ADDED PAVILLIONS *********** One key feature of the addition (completed 2006) is a huge hovering red canopy that extends over a central court and terraces, that engulfes us in a significant void surrounded by beehive activity in three added pavillions. One could read this as a challenging possibility for activating these spaces beyond their initial architectural proposal - this one being a grand gesture by

EL VAQUERO DEL RASTRO : EASY RIDING IN MADRID ************ Within a regulated regime of driving codes and standardized vehicles, the fleeting presence of El Vaquero del Rastro surely catches the attention. A conglomerate of comic figures is glued up as a plastic growth to the back of his motorcycle that harbours a Spanish flag among provocative quotes. Stories reveal that El Vaquero del Rastro has been working as a bike courrier in Madrid, where he has held a comicbook store since 1975. West African vendors working informally on Madrid?s main artery Gran Via rely on their own vigils to ensure a quick wrap-up of their vending spree before authorities show up. Pirate DVDs, jewels, magazines displayed on white canvas instantly get picked up with the pull of a few elastic strings : as everyone is forced to leave, there remains a sense of a rushed collective body that still coalesces with solidarity. In zones of greater affluence, the immobile body also disrupts the flow : Chinese vendors socialize around beer-vending stalls set up on street corners late on weekend nights ; freezestatue amateurs downplay the idea of maintenance as they unlock themselves to broom away the shoes of passersby ; crisis times attract gold buyers dressed up in highly visible fluorescent jackets with
